Broadcast Electronics And Dolby Demo HD Radio Surround Sound At NAB2006

Quincy, IL. USA − Broadcast Electronics (BE) and Dolby Laboratories, Inc. announced today that they will present a live demonstration of surround sound for HD Radio™ at NAB2006 in the Dolby booth (SU2923). The demonstration will illustrate the ease of studio integration as well as the quality of Dolby® surround sound through the AudioVAULT® environment and the BE transmission chain.

Surround sound will originate from BE’s AudioVAULT digital media system integrated with a DP563 Dolby Pro Logic® II surround encoder and pass through a complete HD Radio transmission chain comprised of a BE XPi 10 HD Radio data exporter and FXi 60 digital FM exciter. Dolby Pro Logic II technology provides captivating surround sound capability on any two-channel HD Radio signal without the need for an additional data path, and has been approved by iBiquity as a surround sound format for the HD Radio system.

"Surround sound adds excitement to radio programming, giving listeners a more compelling experience, and this demonstration shows that it can be done easily and  seamlessly,” said Rocky Graham, Director of Broadcast Products, Dolby Laboratories. “BE and Dolby share a common goal, to provide radio listeners with the best experience possible while also delivering convenient and economical solutions to broadcasters.”

“Surround sound is one of the most exciting benefits that HD Radio can offer, and could significantly build listenership. And, the good news for stations using BE equipment is that there’s very little incremental cost to adopt surround after HD Radio conversion,” commented Neil Glassman, BE Vice President Strategic Marketing.

Broadcast Electronics will demonstrate its full line of studio and RF products at its booth, N1808, during the NAB convention.
