First Commercial Station in NH to Broadcast in HD Radio

MANCHESTER, NH, July 6, 2006—WZID, New Hampshire’s most listened-to radio station, has become the first commercial radio station in New Hampshire to broadcast in digital HD Radio, providing listeners who own HD Radios with crystal-clear, CD-quality sound.  WZID began broadcasting in HD Radio on June 30th.  HD Radio broadcasting provides dramatically higher quality audio and “multicasting” opportunities over the existing spectrum.  HD Radio is free, local, over the air broadcasting with no subscription fees and no monthly fees.  Consumers can purchase HD Radio receivers at a growing number of retailers including Tweeter, Boston Acoustics and Radio Shack.

"We're thrilled to be on the leading edge of the radio revolution,” remarked WZID Program Director Bob Bronson.  “Being the first commercial station in New Hampshire to broadcast in crystal clear HD proves once again that WZID is committed to providing the best possible listening experience to our audience."

“Not only can WZID now offer listeners a vastly enhanced signal,” added WZID President & General Manager Ray Garon, “but HD Radio also gives us the ability to provide more choice through multicasting opportunities down the road.” HD Radio’s multicasting capability gives broadcasters the option to program multiple channels on the same frequency.  “HD is just one more addition to our digital palette which includes an active website, streaming, a 20,000-member E-Mail Club and on-line sales of various products and services.  WZID has become an integral part of the NH Digital lifestyle,” concluded Garon.

HD Radio’s digital signal provides greater clarity with no static, pops, distortion or fades that can sometimes occur with analog radio. The New York Times calls HD Radio “breathtaking,” while The Washington Post reports that “singing takes on a striking new clarity.”
