Automakers Embracing HD Radio Technology in Increasing Numbers

HD Radio Technology Boasts Strong Presence at New York Auto Show

Las Vegas, NV – NAB 2007 – April 17, 2007 – Three automotive brands – BMW, Hyundai and Jaguar – have announced major commitments to HD Radio technology in the past four months, demonstrating that automakers recognize the value of digital AM and FM radio and are eager to offer it to their customers.

The increased profile of HD Radio technology in the automotive industry was evident at the recently concluded New York International Automobile Show where Hyundai and Jaguar each used the spotlight of the show to tout the addition of an HD Radio receiver option in select new models.  Earlier this year, BMW announced that it would extend its factory-installed HD Radio receiver option across the entire product lineup.

“Radio broadcasters have made tremendous investments in HD Radio technology over the past few years, which have helped convince automakers that this technology is the future of AM and FM radio.  As a result, HD Radio technology is being offered on more and more vehicles,” said Jeff McGannon, Vice President, OEM Business Development, iBiquity Digital.  “There are nine brands and 51 models that are planning to offer HD Radio receivers in the next two years, so you can expect many more announcements to come.”

For those who cannot wait to experience HD Radio technology in their cars, there are plenty of options available.  JVC and Kenwood each offer in-dash options for the car, and for those who prefer to keep their existing car sound systems, HD Radio converter products are now available from DICE Electronics and Visteon with other manufacturers to follow later in the year.
